Overview

By understanding how important your heart is, you will hopefully gain a healthy respect for this vital organ and take better care of it. Your heart is very important - it is the center of the your circulatory system, which carries oxygen throughout your body and helps it get rid of waste products.

Keeping your cholesterol low protects your heart from serious cardiovascular complications later on in life, such as heart disease. We all look for low-fat foods in order to maintain a healthy weight and to keep our cholesterol low, but did you know that your liver also makes cholesterol? Have you been told that you have high cholesterol? Before you start blaming yourself - oh why did I eat those French fries - you may need to find out more.

Yes, eating foods made with trans fat and high cholesterol foods such as many fast foods will affect your body's level of bad cholesterol (also known as LDL), but a low-fat diet is only one factor in improving the level of cholesterol in your blood.

Genetics may also be a factor. For some people, high levels of cholesterol could be from inherited disorders of cholesterol.

But the most important goal is to improve your diet, and get more exercise in order to increase your good cholesterol (also known as HDL), and lower blood cholesterol, which will lower your risk for heart disease.
